Math Solver

Type a question written as a formula and get the answer with the main steps. Answers are checked before they are shown.

Works with questions written as formulas, like 2x+3=7 or x^2-5x+6=0. It does not read word problems or pictures.

Typing questions in words and solving from a photo are planned. Today this tool solves questions written as formulas.

How to Use the Math Solver

This solver works with questions written as formulas, the way you would type them into a calculator. Pick the kind of question, type it, and read the answer, the steps and the check underneath.

  1. Choose the type of question: Pick Solve, Simplify, Expand, Factor, Derivative, Integral, Matrix, Statistics or Calculate a number from the menu.
  2. Type your question: Write it with the keyboard: x^2 for a power, sqrt(x) for a square root, pi for π, and 2x for 2 times x. You can also tap an example to see the format.
  3. Press the button: The answer appears below, with the rule or method used and a check where one is possible.
  4. Read the note: If a result is only a numerical approximation, or the tool cannot solve the question, it says so plainly.

What This Tool Can and Cannot Do

It can: It solves questions written as formulas: equations and systems, simplifying, expanding and factoring, derivatives and integrals, matrices, statistics, and number calculations with exact fractions and square roots.

It cannot: It does not read word problems, geometry diagrams, proofs or pictures. Some integrals have no formula (for example e^(x^2)), and some equations can only be solved numerically; the tool tells you when that happens instead of guessing. Typing questions in words and solving from a photo are planned for the future.

Key Features

  • Equations and systems: Linear, quadratic and higher polynomial equations, equations with fractions, and systems of linear equations with exact fractions.
  • Algebra: Simplify, expand and factor expressions, including factoring polynomials into irreducible parts.
  • Calculus: Derivatives up to the fourth order, indefinite integrals for many common functions, and definite integrals with exact or numerical values.
  • Matrices: Determinant, inverse, transpose, rank, eigenvalues, powers, products and A·x = b for matrices up to 10 × 10.
  • Statistics: Mean, median, mode, quartiles, variance and standard deviation for a list of numbers.
  • Checked and private: Answers are checked by putting them back or by an independent numerical test. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I type a math question?

Use the keyboard symbols: ^ for powers (x^2), * or nothing for multiplication (2x), / for fractions (1/2), sqrt(x), pi, e, sin(x), ln(x), and ° for degrees. Brackets can be (), [] or {}. Digits in Urdu or Arabic script work too.

Which kinds of questions can it solve?

Equations and systems of linear equations, simplifying, expanding and factoring, derivatives, integrals (indefinite and definite), matrices, statistics, and plain number calculations. Pick the type in the menu first.

Does it understand word problems or photos?

Not yet. It only understands questions written as formulas. Tools that read sentences or pictures are planned, and the button under the answer area will be turned on when they are ready.

How do I know the answer is right?

Solutions of equations are put back into the original equation, derivatives are compared with a numerical slope, and integrals are differentiated again to get the question back. If an answer cannot be confirmed, it is not shown.

Why does it say "numerical" or "≈"?

Some equations, such as sin(x) = 0.5, or polynomials of high degree, have no simple exact formula. The tool then finds the values by calculation and marks them with ≈ or "numerical". They are accurate to about ten digits.

Is my question sent to a server?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser, nothing is uploaded or stored, and it works the same offline once the page has loaded.
